More than just a castle, Kerak Castle is a fortress of legends, battles, and civilizations. Rising above the mountains of Al-Karak, it offers visitors a journey through centuries of history, mystery, and breathtaking panoramic views.

Rising nearly 1,000 meters above sea level on a dramatic rocky plateau, Kerak Castle stands as one of the greatest fortresses in the Middle East and one of Jordan’s most extraordinary historical landmarks.

But Kerak Castle is far more than an ancient stone fortress.

It is an entire world of hidden tunnels, towering walls, underground chambers, forgotten passageways, legendary battles, and civilizations that shaped the history of the region for thousands of years.

The earliest foundations of the castle date back to the Moabite Kingdom around the 9th century BC, when the city was known as “Kir Moab” or “Kir Hareseth.” At the time, it served as a major political and military center for the Moabites, whose presence left a lasting mark on the history of southern Jordan.

Archaeological remains within the castle also reveal Nabataean influence, including carved figures and inscriptions found in the earliest foundations. Later, during the Roman and Byzantine eras, the fortress became a strategic defensive stronghold protecting trade and travel routes linking the Levant, Arabia, and Egypt.

With the arrival of the Islamic conquests, the castle entered a new chapter after the Muslim armies led by Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah reached the region. Muslim rulers later strengthened and expanded the fortress, recognizing its unmatched strategic importance.

Although the castle is globally famous for its role during the Crusader period, its origins are far older than the Crusades themselves. The Crusaders did not build Kerak from nothing — they reinforced and expanded an already ancient stronghold in 1142 AD because of its commanding position over trade, pilgrimage, and military routes between Egypt, Syria, and the Arabian Peninsula.

From these walls, armies were watched, caravans were controlled, and wars were planned. Salah al-Din (Saladin) himself recognized the castle’s immense importance and laid siege to it after the Battle of Hattin before eventually reclaiming it for the Muslim world.

The Mamluks later transformed the fortress even further, adding massive towers and military defenses, including the famous Tower of Al-Zahir Baybars, whose walls still stand today with astonishing thickness reaching up to seven meters.

Walking through Kerak Castle today feels less like visiting a monument and more like entering a hidden medieval city. Visitors can explore mysterious underground corridors, rock-cut tunnels, giant halls, water reservoirs, royal courts, and defensive chambers that still carry the echoes of centuries of conflict and power.

The famous traveler Ibn Battuta once described Kerak as “the most remarkable and impregnable of fortresses,” praising its carved stone passageways and the deep valleys surrounding it from every direction — a feeling visitors still experience the moment they step inside.

Beyond its history, the castle offers breathtaking panoramic views over the old city of Al-Karak, the surrounding valleys, and the distant mountains, creating one of the most unforgettable landscapes in Jordan.

Today, the castle also houses an archaeological museum displaying artifacts from the Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods, reflecting the extraordinary diversity of civilizations that once passed through this land.

At night, Kerak Castle transforms into an entirely different experience, as lights illuminate its giant stone walls and ancient towers, creating a dramatic atmosphere that makes visitors feel transported centuries back in time.
