About the Landmark
Religious Sites
At the Shrine of Abdullah ibn Rawahah, you feel the calm site and its link to the Battle of Mu’tah, where silence meets sacrifice.
On land shaped by one of the most defining moments of early Islamic history, the Shrine of Abdullah ibn Rawahah in Al-Karak stands as a meaningful destination tied to the legacy of the Battle of Mu’tah. Named after the companion Abdullah ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him), the third commander in the Battle of Mu’tah in 629 CE, the site reflects a legacy of courage, eloquence, and steadfastness, as he was martyred after carrying the banner of the Muslims in a pivotal moment that shaped Islamic memory. The shrine is located within a wider area that gathers the memorial sites of the commanders of Mu’tah. It lies only about 300 meters from the shrines of Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib and Zayd ibn Harithah (may Allah be pleased with them), allowing you to move through closely connected sites that share the same historical context within one meaningful landscape. Rather than being seen as a single religious stop, the site represents a deeper space of meaning tied to sacrifice and resilience. From the moment you arrive, you feel a quiet presence that differs from conventional historical sites, where silence blends with the weight of memory embedded in the place. The surrounding natural calm enhances reflection and allows you to reconnect with the events of the Battle of Mu’tah and the transformations it represents in early Islamic history. Reconstructed in 1997, the shrine became part of an integrated religious and cultural complex, including the tomb of Abdullah ibn Rawahah, a cultural center, arcades, an Islamic school, a multi-purpose hall, a library, gardens, and organized visitor facilities designed to support a smooth experience. The site continues to attract those interested in religious and historical tourism from across the Islamic world and beyond, especially those drawn to places where history and spiritual reflection coexist. As you move through the area, layers of silence, landscape, and memory unfold together, making the site feel less like a location and more like a living imprint of one of the most significant chapters in early Islamic history.
