About the Landmark
Archaeological Sites
Located in Al-Qasr District, north of Karak Governorate, Khirbet Al-Balua preserves the legacy of the ancient Kingdom of Moab. Its famous Balua Stele and historic fortifications reveal a civilization that flourished thousands of years ago, offering visitors a remarkable journey into Jordan's ancient past.
Overview
Located about 8 km northeast of Al-Qasr and approximately 26 km north of Karak, Al-Balu'a Archaeological Site is one of the most significant archaeological landmarks in Al-Qasr District. The site preserves the remains of a fortified settlement that flourished during the Iron Age and occupied a strategic position overlooking the ancient King's Highway.
Through History
Archaeological investigations indicate that Al-Balu'a was first occupied during the Early Bronze Age and continued to be inhabited throughout the Middle and Late Bronze Ages. The settlement reached its peak during the Iron Age as part of the Kingdom of Moab before remaining occupied during the Hellenistic, Nabataean, Roman, Ayyubid, and Mamluk periods. Excavations conducted by international archaeological missions, including La Sierra University in cooperation with Jordan's Department of Antiquities in 2019, have revealed the site's long and complex history.
Site Features
Al-Balu'a is best known for the Balu'a Stele, discovered in 1930 by the explorer Head and now preserved at the Jordan Museum. The basalt monument depicts a Moabite king receiving a royal scepter from an Egyptian deity, with the goddess Hathor standing behind him, illustrating cultural connections between Moab and ancient Egypt. Excavations have also uncovered double defensive walls, the remains of a Moabite fortress protecting the King's Highway and Wadi Al-Mujib, as well as an Assyrian-Babylonian period house used for domestic life, textile production, olive pressing, and grain milling. Some researchers associate the stele with a visit by Pharaoh Thutmose III, although this interpretation remains debated.
Significance
Al-Balu'a is among the most important archaeological sites representing the Kingdom of Moab. Its discoveries provide valuable evidence of ancient urban planning, defensive architecture, economic activity, and regional cultural interaction. The Balu'a Stele remains one of the finest examples of Moabite monumental art ever discovered in Jordan.
