Well Of Midian

The Well of Midian near Karak is an ancient site linked to the story of Prophet Moses, known for its calm waters within a historic natural setting.

A short distance from Mutah University, within the ancient village of Midian south of Karak, you enter a landscape where history and sacred narrative naturally converge at the Well of Midian, one of Jordan’s oldest religious and historical sites. The location is closely linked to the Quranic account of Prophet Moses (PBUH), who arrived at the waters of Midian and assisted the daughters of Prophet Shuaib (PBUH) in watering their flock, embedding the story into the site’s enduring cultural memory. As you move closer, what is locally known as the miracle of the well reveals itself not only in its antiquity, but in the extraordinary behavior of its water; it flows gently between basalt rocks within an oval basin, maintaining a steady level of around 15 cm, completely silent yet continuously moving, creating a striking impression of stillness despite constant flow. Around you, the setting unfolds through layers of time -ancient basalt- built houses and nearby caves form a textured environment that deepens the sense of presence, where geological formation and historical memory merge into a single immersive experience.
