Overview
Northwest of Karak city, approximately 9 kilometers from the city center, lies Bathan Heritage Village, one of the traditional villages that still preserves its authentic architectural character and local identity. The village represents an important example of old Karak settlements, combining historic stone houses, agricultural landscapes, and a strong connection to local community memory.
Through History
Bathan carries a long history that reflects the traditional rural settlement patterns of Karak. The old village contains heritage houses, some of which are estimated to be around 500 years old, preserving the story of generations who lived in this area and shaped its social identity.
The village was not only a residential area but also a space where social relationships, cooperation, and community traditions developed over centuries.
Architecture and Identity
The village is distinguished by its traditional stone houses built closely together, creating a unique architectural scene where buildings appear almost connected as one structure. Constructed with local stone and traditional materials, these houses include narrow passages, old doors, and windows that reflect the character of historic Karak architecture.
This architectural style reflects the close social relationships that shaped village life in the past.
Natural Landscape and Agriculture
Bathan enjoys a distinctive mountainous location overlooking the surrounding valleys and southern Jordan landscape. Its orchards of grapes, olives, and figs add to the beauty of the village and highlight its agricultural heritage.
Traditional water channels were also used to distribute water to agricultural lands, demonstrating the local community’s knowledge of managing natural resources.
Social Heritage and Local Memory
One of Bathan’s most famous symbols is the historic Bathan Sidr Tree, an ancient tree believed to be more than 500 years old. It served as a gathering place for villagers and became part of the social memory and traditions of the community.
